Water heater: repair or replace?

The right choice depends on the diagnosed fault, tank condition, parts and hot water needs. A failed component does not always mean a new heater.

Water heater: repair or replace?

Distinguish the appliance from the connections

A leaking joint, safety group or thermostat fault may be repairable. A corroded storage tank leaking through its body is a different situation. The exact source and appliance type need identifying before comparing options.

Consider scale and component condition

Descaling may improve a suitably diagnosed deposit problem, but cannot repair a perforated tank or failed board. Ask whether the component is available and whether other significant wear is present. The age of the appliance is useful context, not a diagnosis by itself.

If replacing, reassess capacity and access

Occupants, bathrooms and simultaneous use help determine storage volume or instantaneous output. Available energy, ventilation, flue, electrical supply and water connections constrain the choice. A larger cylinder is not automatically better and may increase storage losses.
