Identify the type of water heater
A gas instantaneous heater, an electric storage heater, a combi boiler and an indirectly heated cylinder work differently. Burners, heating elements, thermostats, sensors, valves and controls therefore require different checks. The exact reference and serial number matter more than the brand alone.
Checks you can describe safely
Note whether every tap is affected or only one. A local mixer or aerator problem can resemble a heater fault. Record the display, error message and visible pressure without removing a cover. If a circuit breaker repeatedly trips, do not keep resetting it. With a major leak, isolate water and energy only if you can do so safely.
Lukewarm water, low flow and unstable temperature
Possible causes include scale, a restricted filter, a sensor, thermostat, mixing at a tap or insufficient flow through an instantaneous heater. Compare hot and cold water at several outlets. A fault code is a clue, not proof that a particular component needs replacing.
Gas heater safety and ventilation
Ignition, flame detection, water flow, air supply and flue operation work together. Keep ventilation openings clear, especially around appliances that draw combustion air from the room. Electric heaters, safety groups and scale
Limited discharge from the safety group during heating may reflect normal expansion. Continuous or substantial discharge, including when the heater is not warming, needs assessment. A leaking cylinder itself is different from a leaking connection. Descaling follows the manufacturer’s procedure and may involve checking the element, seals and protective anode. It cannot repair a corroded tank.
