Primary heat exchanger: deposits, leaks and repair

Understand which exchanger is involved

Water in the primary circuit receives heat through the exchanger walls. Materials and design vary by appliance. A condensing boiler also recovers some heat from the combustion gases. This main exchanger differs from the smaller plate heat exchanger used for domestic hot water in some combi boilers.

Symptoms do not establish the cause

A rising temperature, unusual noise, shutdown or loss of water may lead to exchanger checks. Poor circulation, air or deposits elsewhere can create similar behaviour. A visible leak under the boiler must be traced: a nearby seal or connection may be responsible rather than the exchanger body.

Cleaning must suit the component

Manufacturer instructions, material and condition determine whether and how cleaning is appropriate. Uncontrolled chemicals or tools can damage surfaces and seals. Servicing can address suitable deposits, but it cannot repair every crack or corrosion defect. Access and previous maintenance history also matter.

Compare repair and replacement costs

The component cost, surrounding condition, labour and availability should be assessed together. A major exchanger repair may require comparing the overall boiler condition with replacement, but no decision should be based on age alone. After work, the relevant tightness, circulation and combustion checks are essential.

Arrange a diagnosis in Anderlecht

Provide the make, exact model, full fault message and when the symptom occurs. Keep the appliance accessible without opening it, and mention previous repairs or leaks. ChauffePro can discuss breakdown diagnosis, repair and servicing. Availability and the proposed work are confirmed for your installation.
