Plate heat exchanger: lukewarm water and low flow

A combi boiler’s plate heat exchanger can affect domestic hot water temperature and flow. Scaling is only one possible cause of these symptoms.

Plate heat exchanger: lukewarm water and low flow

Two water circuits exchange heat

In a typical plate exchanger, heating water transfers heat to domestic water through thin plates while the circuits remain separate. A boiler using a different hot water arrangement may not have this component. The model and hydraulic layout must therefore be identified before diagnosis.

Compare taps and boiler behaviour

Lukewarm water, temperature swings or reduced hot flow can involve deposits or restrictions, but also a diverter valve, sensor or mixing tap. Note whether all outlets are affected and whether central heating remains normal. Comparing hot and cold flow helps distinguish a local fixture issue from production trouble.

Descale or replace?

Cleaning is considered according to the material, level of fouling and manufacturer’s procedure. A damaged or internally leaking exchanger is a different problem. The technician assesses the primary and domestic sides and the condition of associated seals rather than assuming every hot water fault is scale.

Checks after the intervention

The replacement reference and connections must match the appliance. After work, the system is checked for tightness, stable hot water production and correct switching between functions. Ask what the quote includes and whether the wider cause of contamination or restriction also needs attention.

Arrange a diagnosis in Anderlecht

Provide the make, exact model, full fault message and when the symptom occurs. Keep the appliance accessible without opening it, and mention previous repairs or leaks. ChauffePro can discuss breakdown diagnosis, repair and servicing. Availability and the proposed work are confirmed for your installation.
